Bhutan Travel Policy & Visitor Information

Welcome to Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Bhutan follows a unique tourism policy based on sustainability, cultural preservation, and meaningful travel experiences under the philosophy of “High Value, Low Impact Tourism.”

To assist our guests in planning their journey, please review the following travel guidelines and important visitor information.

1. Visa & Entry Requirements

All foreign nationals, except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, are required to obtain a visa prior to arrival in Bhutan.

Visa applications may be processed:

Passport Validity

Visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended date of departure from Bhutan.

Visa Fee

  • USD 40 per person (non-refundable)

Indian Nationals

Indian citizens may enter Bhutan using:

  • A valid Indian Passport, or
  • A valid Voter Identity Card.

Entry permits are required and can be processed online or at designated entry points.

2. Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

SDF Rates (2026)

International Tourists

  • USD 100 per person, per night

Children

  • 6–12 years: USD 50 per night
  • Under 6 years: Exempt from SDF

Indian Nationals

  • INR 1,200 per person, per night

SDF policies and government charges are subject to revision in accordance with Royal Government of Bhutan regulations.

3. Taxes & Government Charges

Applicable government taxes and service charges may apply to tourism-related services including accommodation, transportation, and guided experiences, in accordance with current Bhutanese regulations.

4. Getting to Bhutan

By Air

Paro International Airport is Bhutan’s only international airport.

Airlines operating flights to Bhutan include:

  • Drukair, Royal Bhutan Airlines
  • Bhutan Airlines

By Land

Visitors may enter Bhutan through designated land entry points including:

  • Phuntsholing
  • Gelephu
  • Samdrup Jongkhar

5. Travel Insurance

Guests are strongly encouraged to obtain comprehensive travel insurance covering:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Trekking and adventure activities
  • Flight disruptions and cancellations
  • Personal belongings

6. Currency & Payments

The official currency of Bhutan is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (Nu.).

Indian Rupees are widely accepted throughout the country.

Credit and debit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and urban establishments; however, cash is recommended for travel to rural areas.

7. Best Time to Visit Bhutan

Spring (March – May)

Pleasant temperatures, blooming flowers, and vibrant landscapes.

Summer (June – August)

Monsoon season with lush greenery and occasional rainfall.

Autumn (September – November)

Clear mountain views, cultural festivals, and ideal trekking conditions.

Winter (December – February)

Cool and dry weather with snow in higher elevations.
